The Girl Who Silenced the UN for 5 Minutes

The video below is of 12 year-old Severn Suzuki speaking to the Plenary Session at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio Centro, Brazil. While this video is nearly 20 years old, Severn Suzuki’s message is – unfortunately – as true or truer in 2010 than it was in 1992. One bright point is that the global community did come together to address the danger to the ozone layer. Thanks to the Montreal Protocol, CFC production was sharply limited beginning in 1987 and phased out completely by 1996. Scientists report that the upper atmosphere ozone depletion rate has slowed down significantly during the past decade, although full recovery will take several lifetimes. We CAN do the same with climate change if the global community works together now, before the climate has reached the tipping point.
