Indians And Cowboys Join Together To Reject & Protect

On April 22, an alliance of pipeline fighters — ranchers, farmers, tribal communities, and their friends — called the Cowboy and Indian Alliance rode into Washington DC and set up camp on the National Mall.

For 5 days, they will hold ceremonies and demonstration to remind him of the threat this tar sands pipeline poses to our climate, land, water and tribal rights.

On April 26 [note date change], the Alliance has invited friends and allies against the pipeline to join us as we conclude our camp and march together to make an unmistakable message to Pres. Obama.

Betting The Farm On Hazardous Pipelines With Poor Track Records

Ready or not, painful or not, we are in the middle of a huge shift from an oil dependent economy to one that is run on renewables, the Great Transition. Our governments and the corporations that control them – the people and structures that have become out-of-this-world wealthy from the way we do things now and are heavily invested in maintaining the status quo – are willing to bet the farm, and clean water, clean air, and a stable climate, on new pipelines that will carry more dirty fuel across agricultural land and aquaducts across the Turtle Island (the First Peoples’ name for North America). It’s up to citizens to stop the insanity. Fractracker.org has compiled the available data on U.S. pipeline incidents – publicly available from Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) – and it’s startling. There were 1,887 incidents in the gathering and transmission, distribution, and hazardous liquids pipelines between January 1, 2010 and March 29, 2013, or an average of 1.6 incidents per day. Only addicts who have lost the perspective of the big picture along with a sense of responsibility for the future would be willing to “roll the dice” on this bad bet.

Congressman: Tar Sands Pipeline Would Turn U.S. Into Canadian “Sewer”

During a meeting with Canadian First Nations leaders this week, Congressman Dennis Kucinich spoke out against the proposed 2,750-kilometre-long Keystone XL project which would carry oil from the Alberta tar sands across the United States:

“We cannot trust the oil interests to do the right thing for the economy, for the environment. We know that…We saw what happened when we let the oil interests get ahead of the regulation of their industry in the Gulf of Mexico. We are not going to let them turn the rest of North America into a sewer through the tarsands project.”

This is a crucial moment for Americans to speak up loudly and let the State Department know that it mustn’t approve this project, which benefits TransCanada Pipeline and the Koch brothers at the expense of Canadian wilderness, First Nations health and traditional territory, American land and water, and all of our future.
